Trojans lead December threats, research finds ::

Posted by Steven Gaskill

Trojans were the main form of malware threatening IT users in December, new figures have shown.

Sunbelt Software's latest malware report revealed that six of the top 10 malware detections last month were attributed to trojans, with Trojan.Win32.Generic!BT accounting for 18.69 per cent of cases.

The research also showed that password-stealing Trojan-Spy.Win32.Zbot.gen made up 6.23 per cent of all cases, Trojan.Win32.Generic!SB.0 caused 4.09 per cent and Exploit.PDF-JS.Gen led to 3.31 per cent of detections.

Michael St Neitzel, vice president of threat research at Sunbelt Software, said: "[Trojans are] being used to download a lot of malware, including rogue security products, bot installers and spyware that steal banking."

The group also pointed out that two new examples of malware - Fast Browser Search and Trojan.Win32.Malware - have entered the top ten ranking, accounting for 2.4 per cent and 2.23 per cent of detections respectively.

Recently, McAfee Labs predicted that hackers will make more use of malware such as banking trojans in the next 12 months.
