Workers create data loss risk, poll finds ::

Posted by Jessie Richards

Firms should ensure that they have implanted adequate security solutions, as employees can cause sensitive data to be lost.

A poll conducted by InvisiViewmedia.com found that 98 per cent of workers say it is important to protect corporate information, but 30 per cent still send confidential data in an unsecured email format.

In addition, 23 per cent convert documents into PDF format before attaching it to an email, while two per cent use a fax machine.

The survey also found 46 per cent of employees think it is risky to send information by such methods but believe they have no other option, while 25 per cent say the threat is too small to care about.

Jan Gunner, director at InvisiViewmedia.com commented: "Considering how clued-up most businesses are today when it comes to the very real threat of data interception, it is quite alarming to discover quite a complacent attitude in terms of securing confidential information."

Alan Calder, chief executive of IT Governance, recently said that firms need to ensure that they are complying with data protection legislation, after the Information Commissioner's Office said it will clamp down on those which breach the Data Protection Act.
