People illegally downloading at work, research finds ::

Posted by Jessie Richards

There has been a rise in the number of workers trying to download illegal software while in the office, a new poll has shown.

Research conducted by web security provider ScanSafe showed IT outsourcing users that there was a 55 per cent increase in the number of attempts to download illegal MP3 and software through corporate networks in the last three months.

The organisation said that people have become increasingly complacent about obtaining illegal applications and are now tempted to use their company's high-speed internet connections to allow them to do this.

Spencer Parker, director of product management at ScanSafe, commented: "Employees mistakenly assume they can use the internet at work in exactly the same way as they use it at home and this is potentially one of the reasons for this steady increase in illegal download attempts over recent months."

However, Mr Parker pointed out that employers can be held liable if workers use their internet connection for illegal purposes, which may provide a good reason to deploy security solutions.

A recent report by InvisiViewmedia.com claimed that too many workers are risking sending sensitive information in unsecured formats.
