ICO powers will boost data protection, claims expert :: |
Posted by Louise Tate
Extra powers for the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) are necessary to demonstrate the importance of data protection, IT outsourcing users have been told.
Last week, the ICO announced that from April 6th it will be able to issue fines of up to £500,000 for serious breaches of the Data Protection Act.
Commenting on the development, Simon Heron, internet security analyst at Network Box, suggested that the new powers send a powerful message to companies.
He claimed the relatively-low fines that the ICO used to issue did not provide firms with a strong incentive to carry out thorough risk assessments into their data protection.
"There does need to be some extra stick involved to make companies focus more carefully on information they store on people. This is a necessary step," the expert commented.
Recent research from security solutions provider Symantec found that virtualisation is seen by companies as the main IT priority of 2010, followed by information security, backup and recovery.
