Posted by Louise Tate

Spammers are using current affairs to spread their phishing messages and malware, IT outsourcing users have been warned.

The McAfee Q4 Threats Report revealed that 2009 saw hackers exploit events such as Michael Jackson's death, the Air France plane crash and swine flu in order to increase the number of people reading their emails.

In addition, the research explained that phishing scams were distributed in emails claiming to be about the 2010 FIFA World Cup, while trojans were sent out disguised as messages from the Centers for Disease Control.

"Politically-motivated attacks are on the rise around the world, targeting popular social networking destinations, as seen recently with the Iranian Cyber Army's political attack aimed at Twitter," the report added.

Mike Gallagher, senior vice president and chief technology officer at McAfee Labs, also noted that China is the top generator of SQL-injection attacks and the production of zombie computer.

Sunbelt Software recently revealed that trojans were the most common e-threat facing IT outsourcing customers during January.
