Valentine's Day brings malware risk, firm claims :: |
Posted by Steven Gaskill
Hackers are using Valentine's Day themed messages as bait for malware infections, it has been claimed.
A study by security software provider BitDefender pointed out that internet searches are likely to be connected to romantic terms as February 14th draws closer and suggested that hackers are attempting to exploit this.
The organisation revealed that fake antivirus program Trojan.Fakeav.YZ is being disguised in Valentine's themed webpages in a bid to infect as many users as possible.
"Malware loves traditions, especially when it comes to spreading methods: when users select the link to an apparently legitimate Web site displayed in the search results page, they are automatically redirected to a Web page that contaminates their systems," BitDefender explained.
To prevent being infected, the company recommended that IT outsourcing users install security solutions such as anti-malware programs, firewalls and spam filters, while systems need to be regularly scanned with antivirus applications.
According to the recent McAfee Q4 Threats Report, spammers themed their messages around news items such as the Air France plane crash, swine flu and Michael Jackson's death to spread their messages in 2009.
