Cloud computing needs to address security, claims expert ::

Posted by Paul Sells

IT security is one of the main challenges facing the cloud computing industry, an expert has suggested.

Speaking at the Westminster eForum, Trend Micro senior security advisor Rik Ferguson told IT services users that cloud computing needs to figure out ways to guarantee data is held in a secure manner.

He pointed out that users do not know where their information is held at a given time when it is stored on virtualisation systems and multi-tenancy storage area networks, which could bring about security worries.

"We as consumers of cloud, we as security providers, need to rethink our security model and I think this is probably the biggest challenge," he said in the seminar.

A report by Trend Micro published last year claimed that hackers are investigating how they can exploit cloud computing and virtualisation, predicted that attacks on the systems will increase during 2010.

The study also said that cybercriminals are expected to attack social networks in the coming year, in order to steal the personal data stored on them.
