Hackers targeting critical business, research finds ::

Posted by Paul Sells

Energy, finance, pharmaceuticals and public sector organisations are the ones most likely to be targeted by hackers, IT support users have been warned.

ScanSafe's Annual Global Threat Report claimed that members of these sectors have double the risk of being attacked by malware from cybercriminals.

The research showed that energy firms have a 356 per cent greater rate of encounters with data theft trojans, while this stands at 322 per cent for pharmaceutical companies.

In addition, the public sector has a 252 per cent greater rate and finance firms experience a rate of 204 per cent.

ScanSafe senior security researcher Mary Landesman commented: "There is a misconception that cybercriminals are only intent on stealing data intended for credit card fraud and identity theft. In reality, cybercriminals are casting a much wider net."

The research also revealed that the average amount of malware encountered by companies is increasing, with the daily number rising from eight at the beginning of last year to 19 by the close.

A recent Sunbelt Software report showed that Trojan.Win32.Generic!BT, the generic detection for trojans, was the most common malware threat faced by IT support users in January.
