Database security always important, says expert :: |

The recent data breach at oil firm Royal Dutch Shell demonstrates the importance of IT security, an expert has claimed.
Last week, Dutch Shell chief ethics and compliance officer Richard Wiseman wrote to the company's staff to explain that the personal details of 176,000 employees and contractors had been distributed to activists opposed to the firm.
Alan Phillips, chief executive of information security consultancy 7Safe, said that the case highlights the dangers of making a system easy to use at the expense of protecting sensitive data.
"There is the trade-off between security and usability that needs to be weighed up. File security can be enhanced with encryption mechanisms," he commented.
Mr Phillips told IT outsourcing users that they should consider issues such as authentication methods and authorisation rights when looking to increase security on their databases.
The expert also claimed that SQL injections are a common cause of data breaches in poorly-coded database applications, accounting for around 60 per cent of cases.
