Cybercriminals prefer email, claims expert ::

Posted by Steven Gaskill

Fraudsters prefer to use email in their scams because of its ease and low cost, IT outsourcing users have heard.

Recently, the Office of Fair Trading revealed that 73 per of UK adults have received a scam email in the past year, making it the most popular delivery channel.

This compares to 21 per cent who have been sent a letter as part of a scam, while 12 per cent have been sent a text message.

Commenting on the findings, Greg Day, director of security strategy for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at McAfee, attributed this to the low cost of the method, as emails are free to send and cheap to produce.

He added that fraudsters can purchase scam generation toolkits which allow them to build an email campaign to mass mail potential victims.

"Cost, ease - literally now anybody can do this with these kinds of toolkits, you no longer have to be a professional expert, it's proven, it's something you can repeat," the expert said.
